Plantain History

Throughout history, plantain has been used to treat wounds. The Greek Pedanius Dioscorides (40 BC-90BC) used plantain for wound healing, dog bites and burns. Later, Pliny the Roman (23 A.D.-79 A.D.) referred to the plant as a remedy for bites caused by wild animals.

Colonist during the 1600’s brought Plantain with them from Europe, whether purposeful or not is unknown. Natives referred to the herb as “White Mans Foot” due to the link between where colonist walked and where the herb grew. Due to the similar climate, it has widely spread throughout North America. Native people used this plant for its healing properties as well. It grows well in active areas that have a lot of movement and foot traffic.
